About the Program
Information About the Master of Science in
Human Environmental Sciences, Emphasis on Interactive
Technology
The specialization in General Studies is designed to permit students to
pursue work in more than one area of the College of Human Environmental
Sciences at The University of Alabama. The program has the
flexibility to quickly respond to the needs of students and employers
in a rapidly changing environment. Students develop a plan of
study with an advisory committee who will work with students using
e-mail. The degree requires 30 hours of coursework, including one
course in research methods and six hours of special projects.
Students interested in completing the General Studies program may
complete an in-depth study in Interactive Technology. All courses
are available online. The courses focus on methods of designing,
selecting, and coordinating electronic messages, products, services,
computer systems, digital environments and software for use in
organizations.
Students can transfer up to 6 semester hours of graduate-level
coursework, with approval from the program advisor. According to
Graduate School policy, the course can be no more than six (6) years
old at the time of graduation. For this program, coursework in
related areas can be transferred into the program with approval from
the program advisor. Courses of full graduate-level credit earned
in a regionally accredited institution where a student was enrolled in
the graduate school may be submitted for review for inclusion in a
degree program. Evaluation of credit for transfer will not be
made until the student has enrolled in the Graduate School of The
University of Alabama. Credit will not be accepted for transfer
from any institution at which the student failed to achieve a "B"
average on all graduate work attempted. In addition, only courses
in which a grade of "B" or higher will be considered for transfer.
The application for admission to the Graduate School is available
on-line at http://www.graduate.ua.edu
and can be submitted electronically. A student with a cumulative
grade point average of 3.0, a grade point average of 3.0 on the last 60
hours of coursework, or a 3.0 in a master's degree program is not
required to submit standardized test scores. A student with less
than a 3.0 grade point average must submit acceptable scores on either
the Miller Analogies Test or the Graduate Record Examination.
The Master of Science Degree
The Master of Science (M.S.) degree in Human and Environmental Sciences
is responsive to the demand for post-baccalaureate education. The
master's degree has the flexibility to quickly respond to the needs of
students and employers in a rapidly changing work environment. A
candidate will be recommended for the award of the Master of Science
degree in Human Environmental Sciences with an emphasis in Interactive
Technology (IT) upon satisfactory completion of the program.
Offered Totally Online
This is a totally asynchronous program, using Electronic Tutorial
Instruction (ETI) for coursework. It is an interactive program
using computer-mediated collaboration tools.
Curriculum
The curriculum is dynamic, with course
content changing each term to reflect the changes in the digital tools
and the environments in which these tools are applied. Activities
in the curriculum are designed to encourage students in the program to
